A Tramp Abroad is dedicated to publishing quirky, helpful travel tips and wanderlust inspiring essays. While we hope to provide you with practical information to help you on your way, our main focus is to inspire people to get out into the world and explore – even if it’s just within your own neighborhood.
The title of our site – A Tramp Abroad – was inspired by a book of the same name written by Mark Twain about a journey across Europe he took with his friend. Like all travelers, Twain and his companion think they understand everything but usually find out (too late) that they actually understand nothing at all.
The word ‘tramp’ has evolved significantly since Twain wrote his book in 1880, but its linguistic origin means “to press hard upon”; and aren’t all journeys best tackled with a confident, resounding tread? We hope this website will inspire you to take the first step.
Forget safety. Live where you fear to live.
Destroy your reputation. Be notorious.
I have tried prudent planning long enough.
From now on, I’ll be mad.-Rumi
A Tramp Abroad is managed and edited by Amy Thibodeau and Dan Zambonini. We are passionate about the web and have a number of ongoing online projects including The Januarist, Amorphous Blog, Lame But Cool and Lost and Looking. We are also freelance content strategists and are currently on a year long around-the-world journey.
This website would not be possible without the support of our correspondent writers from locations near and far – thank you.
