Canadians have always known this, but now we have an official report to prove it; flying in Canada is really expensive.
In a report titled ‘Canada’s Not-So-Friendly Skies,’ The Frontier Centre for Public Policy compared five Canadian flights, using the cheapest airfares available, against flights of similar distance in the U.S. and Europe. The results, while not unexpected, were still startling. For a total distance of about 3,300 domestic miles, fares in Europe tallied about $525, compared to $935 in the U.S. and close to $1,500 in Canada. Ouch.
On a personal note, we’ve decided to drive from Vancouver to Regina because we can rent a car for two weeks and pay for gas for about $500 less than we can fly – even with a seat sale.
In my experience, it’s often cheaper to fly from Toronto to London, UK (thanks British Airways) than to fly from Toronto to Regina. It’s sad because it makes exploring the far reaches of Canada really unaffordable for most of us.
