Travel Warning Budapest: Violence at Gay Pride Week

Gay Pride Week - Budapest

The British Government has issued a travel advisory to citizens planning to travel to Budapest to take part in the Gay Pride celebrations coming up this weekend:

“Take extra care if you are planning to attend the parade,” the advisory read. It further warns the LGBT travelers to take extra precautions. This warning comes after a string of violence at Budapest’s pride parade in 2008. The advisory reminded travelers of the events in 2008, when right-wing, anti-gay demonstrators clashed with riot police and two gas bombs were thrown.

A press release by Budapest Pride 2010 organizers, there has already been violence perpetuated by neo-nazi revelers and the police haven’t been terribly supportive:

Riot police appeared in large numbers, but they surrounded the victim and demanded that he identify himself, while the perpetrators walked away from the scene. It is only because Festival participants started to shout and point at the perpetrators that the police intercepted their escape.

Several organisers of Budapest Pride heard one police officer using impermissible language, saying that the Festival was provoking the extreme right group with our flag …

For those willing to take the risk, a solidarity march will be held this Saturday 10th July beginning at 3 pm starting at Hosok tere. For more information, visit the Budapest Pride website.
